Comme il faut un début à tout, j'ose me donner le droit d'ouvrir un petit fuseau dans le forum des Lambendil pour un petit probleme que je rencontre.
Toute la problématique est dans le titre mais je vais l'expliciter un peu avec quelques extraits du Silmarillion en VO.

Deuxieme partie de la question avec la différenciation (?) du nom de l'Intendant du Gondor, dont la Tour Haute de Minas Tirith porte le nom.

Bon, vu le fruit de mes recherches, cela tend vers une bonne écriture (pour les deux personnes) sous la forme Ecthelion mais j'aimerai avoir vos Lumières sur cette question (et sur la construction/sens de ce nom tant qu'à faire à vous déranger ^^).

Avec 72 occurences pour Ecthelion dans les 12 volumes de HoME et zéro occurence pour Echtelion, je crois que tu as choisi le bon :-)

Echtelion doit être une erreur de typo plusieurs fois répétée dans le Silmarillion (un peu comme Éomer/Eomir dans le SdA)

Dans HoME V (PART THREE - THE ETYMOLOGIES), on trouve l'indication suivante:

[The  entries under  E are  particularly confused  and difficult.  A small
number of original and clear entries  were mostly  struck through  and the
pages covered with faint pencilled notes often hard to interpret.]       
                                                                         
EK-,  EKTE-  spear.  Q  ehte   spear,  ehtar   spearman.  N   aith  spear point,  eg  thorn,  cf.  Egthelion,  Ecthelion  [STELEG].

PS: dans le Silm, la faute de frappe n'existe qu'une seule fois dans l'index car ailleurs dans le texte, on a bien Ecthelion.
Idem: aucun Echtelion dans les UT comme dans le SdA, qu'il s'agisse de celui de Gondolin ou de l'un des deux de Gondor.

Ah, j'allais oublier:

STELEG-  N  thela  point  (of  spear);  egthel,  ecthel,  cf.  Ecthelion (see EK).  [An  illegible  word  after  ecthel  may  read  'same',  i.e.  the same meaning as thela.]

Il est donc bien question de pointe de lance (peut-être ce qu'en français on appellerait au sens figuré un "fer de lance")

Ecthelion must be similarly from Aegthelion. Latter element is a derivative of √stel 'remain firm'. The form with prefix 'sundóma', estel, was used in Q and S for 'hope' - sc. a temper of mind, steady, fixed in purpose, and difficult to dissuade and unlikely to fall into despair or abandon its purpose. The unprefixed stel- gave [? S verb] thel 'intend, mean, purpose, resolve, will'. So Q ? þelma 'a fixed idea, … , will.'

[C. Tolkien:] The word sundóma is an important term in the analysis of Quendian phonological structure. Very briefly indeed, the Quendian consonantal 'base' or sundo was characterised by a 'determinant vowel' or sundóma: thus the sundo KAT has a medial sundóma 'A', and TALAT has the sundóma repeated. In derivative forms the sundóma might be placed before the first consonant, e.g. ATALAT; thus estel beside stel in this note.

Un peu plus de 70 occurences dans HoME et je loupe celle qu'il ne fallait justement pas louper :-(.
Lamentable, le Silmo. Ca m'apprendra à trainer dans cette section.

Très malheureusement, mon CLI (VF) me donne 5 fois Echtelion. Les erreurs de traduction / d'édition sont malheureusement fréquentes (surtout dans les versions françaises, d'ailleurs, même si en VO il y en a de temps en temps)
