The Sindarin dictionary project

Words -- so innocent and powerless as they are, as standing in a dictionary, how potent for good and evil they become in the hands of one who knows how to combine them. [N. Hawthorne]

Dragon Flame, Hesperides

Dragon Flame 2.0 is a freeware application including the Sindarin dictionary, additional lexicons and a complete Sindarin corpus.

CAVEAT: Our Dragon Flame and Hesperides tools both embed now pretty old versions of the Sindarin lexicon (respectively v0.993 from 2003 and v0.994 from 2004). They are archived here as "proofs of concept" and for the source code and executable packages to remain available for anyone interested, but we DO NOT recommend relying on them for any serious work.

Dragon Flame for Microsoft Windows (98, Me, XP, NT4, 2000)

Download the ZIP archive and simply uncompress it and execute the installation program it contains. Dragon Flame will be installed in your "Start" menu.

Dragon Flame 1.0 (december 2002) is no longer available.

Note: On some old Windows systems that do not have the Lucida Sans Unicode font already installed, you might have to reboot the computer. Likewise, DF 2.0 uses Sindarin Tengwar fonts and might require a reboot after installation if you did not already have this font on your system.

Dragon Flame for Linux

Download the DF 2.0.1 for Linux (tar.bz2 archive).

Hesperides for Mac OS X

Thomas Deniau worked on a complete rewrite of Dragon Flame for Mac OS. As far as I can say from the screenshots, it looks really great! This specific version is named Hesperides, after the mythological garden in the Greek mythology.

Download Hesperides 1.2.

Source code is available separately here.

CAVEAT: Our old online search engine features works with version 0.98 of the Sindarin lexicon, which is now highly obsoliete (dating from June 2002). It's archived here as a mere "proof of concept", but we DO NOT recommend using it for any serious work.

Thanks for using Hiswelókë's Sindarin dictionary!

Because of abuses in the past, we had to limit the usage of this search-engine to 800 requests per day. (See also our FAQ page for details on the new policy.)

But if you really need a Sindarin dictionary, please check the download section for Dragon Flame & and our other tools.

Sindarin dictionary in PDF

Looking for the Sindarin dictionary in PDF (Adobe Portable Document Format), ready to be printed?

The process of making a neat PDF version (with additional chapters) is longer than merely updating and correcting the dictionary. The previous PDF editions of Hiswelókë's Sindarin dictionary (known as the Mellon limited edition and the Cabor public edition) were downloaded more than 15000 times since they were made available in 2000-2001. However, we consider them now to be highly obsolete. Please be warned they lack many words and also contain many errors that have been corrected since their publication. We do not recommend getting and using them. For an "up-to-date" dictionary, please rather check our newer "On-line dictionaries" section on this website

Nevertheless, if you still wish to obtain the old 2001 "Cabor" edition in PDF, you can read the license and download your own copy of the Sindarin dictionary. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader, GhostScript or any other PDF-viewer to read the file. If you fail to uncompress the archive or to open the file in Acrobat Reader, please read the FAQ on this site before sending us an e-mail. There is very little we can do if your system is not properly installed.
