Dans "The Lord of the Rings, a Reader's Companion" (prologue, page 37 en édition de poche chez HarperCollins), Hammond & Scull donnent les indications suivantes:
Gollum - The name Gollum is said in The Hobbit , Chapter 5, to represent 'a horrible swallowing noise in his throat'. In The Annotated Hobbit, Douglas A. Anderson suggests that it may have been influenced by Old Norse gull, goll 'gold', one inflected form of wich is gollum 'gold, treasure, something precious' (2nd edn., p.120). Anderson also notes that Gollum had an antecedent in Tolkien's writings, in the poem Glip, written probably around 1928 (published in The Annotated Hobbit, 2nd edn., p. 119).
