A contrario, Gandalf a réellement bénéficié d'une intervention divine directe. Tolkien y consacre une partie d'une lettre au Père Murray en 1954 (Letter 156):
"Gandalf really "died", and was changed... he was sent by a mere prudent plan of the angelic Valar or governors; but Authority had taken up this plan and enlarged it, at the moment of its failure... Sent back, by whom, and whence? Not by the "gods" whose business is only with this embodied world and its time; for he passed "out of thought and time".
Ce passage me semble clair. Cette Autorité hors du temps, qui n'est pas les "dieux", capable de ressusciter Gandalf, de renforcer son pouvoir, et de sauver par son intervention le plan des Valar, quelle est-elle, sinon Eru ?
Le corps des Valar :
ce sujet est traité dans l'"Ósanwë-kenta" (page 25 et note 5 de Vinyar Tengwar#39), il est dit des Valar et Maiar qu'ils ont un rhöa, dans un passage décrivant l'influence négative de l'enveloppe charnelle sur la transmission de pensée.
Rhöa désigne à partir de "Laws and Customs among the Eldar" le corps des Incarnés; ce mot a pour précurseur "rhondo", dont la racine est "s-ron=chair, substance, matière", HoME10, 231. Ainsi, le fana (terme de "The Road goes ever on", qui n'est pas employé dans l'Ósanwë) des Valar est bien une enveloppe matérielle.
Cependant, ce corps n'est à l'origine qu'un "self-arraying", une parure non-essentielle. Il peut devenir nécessaire et contraignant, comme celui des Incarnés, si l'Ainu qui le porte, et le Maia tout particulièrement, s'en sert pour parvenir à ses fins ou pour jouir des plaisirs de la chair ("sustenance and propagation... Most binding is begetting or conceiving").
Ce serait donc un corps spirituel, mais plus on s'en sert, moins il est glorieux!
