1/ Saruman emploie effectivement des Uruks, mais c'est Sauron qui a commencé à les élever (Seigneur des Anneaux, Appendice A.I.iv, « Les Surintendants »). Ils sortent du Mordor en TA 2475.
2/ Il existe des semi-orques en Terre du Milieu : ils font partie des assaillants du Gouffre de Helm (voir SdA, III, 7 et 9, VI, 8).
Au passage, il faut corriger le Guide de Foster qui déclare qu'on ne trouve pas le terme "half-orcs" dans le Lord of the Rings. Il faut donc ajouter les références suivantes : III, 7 (A 560) ; III, 9 (A 589) ; VI, 8 (A 1043).
Tolkien revient sur leur cas dans un texte sur l'origine des Orques, que l'on trouve dans _Morgoth's Ring_, Home X, 418-419 :
"Finally, there is a cogent point, though horrible to relate. It became clear in time that undoubted Men could under the domination of Morgoth or his agents in a few generations be reduced almost to the Orc-level of mind and habits ; and then they would or could be made to mate with Orcs, producing new breeds, often larger and more cunning. There is no doubt that long afterwards, in the Third Age, Saruman rediscovered this, or learned of it in lore, and in his lust for mastery committed this, his wickedest deed : the interbreeding of Orcs and Men, producing both Men-orcs large and cunning, and Orc-men treacherous and vile".
