Je ne crois pas que "Oliphant" soit un nom propre.
En effet, dans une lettre du 30 avril 1944 à son fils Christopher, Tolkien fait clairement de ce mot un nom commun: "A large elephant of prehistoric size, a war-elephant of the Swertings, is loose, and Sam has gratified a life-long wish to see an Oliphaunt, an animal about wich there was a hobbit nursery-rhyme (though it was commonly supposed to be a myth)".
Mais par ailleurs (pour adopter un point de vue interniste), je pense aussi que le fait de l'appeler "Oliphaunt" vient des Hobbits, qui n'ont jamais connu directement cet animal et ont donc pu déformer son nom quand ils l'ont entendu.
