Entièrement d'accord avec cette interprétation traditionnelle, mais ne peut-on pas voir dans ce chapitre "quelques os de la soupe " chère à Tolkien qui connaît par coeur ses classiques ?
Dans Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, nous trouvons ce même proverbe: « 'As I am a true knight, I give my word you shall reach the Green Chapel, there to do your business, sir, in the dawn of the New Year, long before prime. So you lie in your room and take your ease, and I shall hunt in the wood and fulfil the terms of the agreement, and exchange winnings with you when I return here; for I have tested you twice and I find you trustworthy. Now, "Third time pays for all", remember that tomorrow; but let us make merry while we may and give our minds to pleasure, for a man can be sad whenever he wishes.”
