"For the Númenórean view of the previous inhabitants see Faramir's conversation with Frodo, especially II 287 [i.e. LR,663. See also XII:312-14]. The Rohirrim were according to his classification Middle Men, and their importance to Gondor in his time is chiefly in mind and modifies his account; the description of the various men of the southern "fiefs" of Gondor, who were mainly of non-Númenórean descent, shows that other kinds of Middle Men, descended from others of the Three Houses of the Edain, lingered in the West, in Eriador (as the Men of Bree), or further south—notably the people of Dor-en-Ernil (Dol Amroth).
Il s'agit donc bien de la désignation donnée par les Númenoréens eux-même (quels prétentieux ;o) pour les peuples humains restés en TdM au lieu d'aller sur Númenor -- mais de parenté commune avec eux. Y sont notamment comptés les Rohirrim (qui viennent initialement du nord-est), les peuplades au sud du Gondor (cela confirme mon message ci-dessus), les peuplades d'Eriador (les gens de Bree étant mentionnés, mais on doit aussi pouvoir compter les Dunlandais).
Sur le monument:
But the account in annals contains two remarkable details: that there was at the place where Cirion and Eorl stood what appeared to be an ancient monument of rough stones nearly man-high with a flat top; and that on this occasion Cirion to the wonder of many invoked the One (that is God). His exact words are not recorded, but they probably took the form of allusive terms such as Faramir used in explaining to Frodo the content of the unspoken "grace" (before communal meals) that was a Númenórean ritual, e.g. "These words shall stand by the faith of the heirs of the Downfallen in the keeping of the Thrones of the West and of that which is above all Thrones for ever."
Evidemment, la mention "His exact words are not recorded" est contradictoire avec le text "Cirion and Eorl" publié dans les CLI, où cette rencontre est relatée et où la phrase en quenya, prononcée par Cirion, est donnée -- avec le même sens exactement que la "supposition" faite dans le texte ici (où cette phrase est de fait présentée comme une formule rituelle classique).
Je ne saurais que t'encourager à obtenir VT41 pour plus de détails, il en vaut vraiment la peine. Tous les VT n'ont pas le même intérêt selon ce que chacun y cherche, mais ce numéro en particulier contient beaucoup de petits choses intéressantes (au passage, quelques brèves mentions sur la situtation politique de Dol Amroth par rapport au Gondor, ce qui intéresserait un fuseau voisin de celui-ci, actuellement discuté...). C'est une lecture dense et intéressante :)
