Pour ma part ( en tant qu' athée ), le texte ( Silm, p274/Akallabêth )est moins une critique du materialisme que d' une de ses habituelles perversions: un classique " capitalisme sauvage ", et de la soif de pouvoir qui le sous-tend !
Tolkien, dans sa lettre ( Letters, #96, Harper & Collins, 1981 ), laissant, par ailleurs, transparaître le peu d' intérêt qu' il accorde à la " chose politique ", en mêlant, dans sa définition du " materialisme ", [emphase]"..mechanism, " scientific " materialism, Socialism in either of its factions now at war [/emphase]... ( sic ! )...!!!
En effet, voir dans le nazisme un quelconque " socialisme " démontre une certaine confusion politique...Le National-Socialisme n' ayant qu' un très lointain rapport avec quelque socialisme que ce fut ! :)
L' époque, et l' intitulé du parti d' Adolf, y étant, peut-être, pour quelque chose...Le dernier paragraphe de sa lettre étant, à ce propos, dramatiquement révélateur de la manière dont Tolkien appréhendait les événements :

As the servants of the Machines are becoming a privileged class, the Machines are going to be enormously more powerful. What ' s their next move ?
