would like to correct a very often repeated mistake: namely, the notion that Frodo et al. sailed to Valinor. They did not. The most specific statement we have from Tolkien is that Frodo's time of rest of healing was spent in Tol Eressëa: "Hence [Galadriel] concludes her lament with a wish or prayer that Frodo may as a special grace be granted a purgatorial (but not penal) sojourn in _Eressea_, the Solitary Isle in sight of _Aman_ .... (The Land of Aman after the downfall of Númenor, was no longer in physical existence 'within the circle of the world'.) Her prayer was granted ...." (_Letters_ p. 386)"
