Dans HoME III, il y a un passage du Lai des enfants de Húrin où Túrin et ses compagnons se perdent dans les lacis de l'anneau de Melian :

Comme l'anneau est lié à la personne même de Melian, je suppose qu'on peut l'assimiler à une sorte de "contrainte mentale" - son feä (de grande puissance, en tant que Maia) agissant sur celui des personnes qui approchent, et empêchant d'approcher si elle n'y consent.
Peut-être pourrait-on faire un lien avec les deux guetteurs qui barrent l'entrée de Cirith Ungol, et empêchent Sam d'entrer, jusqu'à ce que par l'effet de la fiole de Galadriel, leur volonté ne soit brisée ?
