Certes, le Hobbit, le SdA (et les très beaux décors inspirés d'Alan Lee dans les films de PJ) nous présentent une version bucolique du lieu mais il faut bien reconnaitre que dans le Silmarillion, on lit tout autre chose:
"and Eregion was laid waste, and Celebrimbor slain, and the doors of Moria were shut. In that time the stronghold and refuge of Imladris, that Men called Rivendell, was founded by Elrond Half-elven; and long it endured" ...(NB: le terme "stronghold" est le même dans les CLI)
ce qui fait plutôt penser à une place forte bien protégée et armée qui doit endurer les assauts...
Quant à la capacité d'Imladris à accueuillir toute une armée, il y a cet autre passage du Silmarillion:
"Therefore they made that League which is called the Last Alliance, and they marched east into Middle-earth gathering a great host of Elves and Men; and they halted for a while at Imladris. It is said that the host that was there assembled was fairer and more splendid in arms than any that has since been seen in Middle-earth, and none greater has been mustered since the host of the Valar went against Thangorodrim. [...] From Imladris they crossed the Misty Mountains by many passes and marched down the River Anduin, and so came at last upon the host of Sauron on Dagorlad, the Battle Plain, which lies before the gate of the Black Land.".
Pas de doute par conséquent sur les capacités de casernement de Rivendell.
S'agissant de ce qui se passe plus tard: "In all the days of the Third Age, after the fall of Gil-galad, Master Elrond abode in Imladris, and he gathered there many Elves, and other folk of wisdom and power from among all the kindreds of Middle-earth[...]In Eriador Imladris was the chief dwelling of the High Elves".
Je tiens à souligner le "all the days of the Third Age".
Il ya donc tout lieu de croire que Les troupes d'Elrond ont bel et bien bataillé au Nord pendant la Guerre de l'Anneau, peut-être sous le commandement du Général Glorfindel :-)
Ta mémoire ne te donc trompait pas Dior... Il existe des écrits dans lesquels Rivendell peut acceuillir une armée puissante, apte à défendre le Nord de la TdM.
Un autre passage, dans les CLI (chapitre Concerning Galadriel and Celeborn), peut intéresser notre propos.... Il y est question de la première réunion du Conseil Blanc: "At this time the first Council was held, and it was there determined that an Elvish stronghold in the east of Eriador should be maintained at Imladris rather than in Eregion."
Là encore, on va dans le même sens... :-)
