A priori, pour Tolkien, la description de la vision de la "cité blanche" (identifiée comme Avallonë sur Tol Eressëa) était tout à fait compatible avec un monde sphérique, puisqu'on retrouve cette notion dans The Drowning of Anadûnê (HOME 9), qui est un texte antérieur et qui prend place dans un paradigme affiché d'un monde sphérique :
