A noter quelques remarques et une grande différence entre ces extraits de manuscrits et la version finale :
- Chez Tolkien 'fire' et 'flame' semblent interchangeable : on rencontre indifféremment semble-t-il 'Red Fire'/'red flame' comme 'White Fire'/'white flame'
- Les 'Go on' ont été remplacés par des 'Fly' et surtout le ' I will hold the Bridge' a été remplacé par la phrase énigmatique objet de ce fuseau : 'I must hold the narrow way'.
- L'interdiction 'You cannot pass' est importante pour Tolkien, puisqu'il la triple et la reprend une quatrième fois, alors qu'initialement elle n'apparaissait qu'une seule fois dans le texte. Ceci, associé au 'devoir' de Gandalf de garder le pont, ainsi qu'à la précision d'un manuscrit qui souligne l'interdiction divine qui sépare le monde des ténèbres du monde des hommes ([emphase]« It is forbidden for any Balrog to come beneath the sky »[/emphase]), montre bien que le combat de Gandalf est un combat pour maintenir l'ordre établi.
- Gandalf se présente ici comme 'le maître de la Flamme Blanche', alors que la version finale atténue la formule en en faisant uniquement 'un serviteur du Feu Secret'. Comme si Tolkien, au dernier moment, avait reculé devant une analogie trop poussée entre Gandalf et le Christ combattant ayant préféré remettre Mithrandir à la place de simple envoyé des Valar à ce niveau du récit, l'équivalent d'un simple ange.
